9 Mental Math Tricks and Games for Students
9 Mental Math Tricks and Games for Students Mental math deepens students understanding of fundamental math concepts. In addition, knowing that they can do mental math anywhere, without relying on pencils, paper, or manipulatives, gives students a sense of success and independence. Once students learn mental math tricks and techniques, they can often figure out the answer to a math problem in the amount of time it would take them to pull out a calculator. Did You Know? In the early stages of learning math, the use of math manipulatives (such as beans or plastic counters) helps children visualize and understand one-to-one correspondence and other mathematical concepts. Once children grasp these concepts, they are ready to start learning mental math. Mental Math Tricks Help students improve their mental math skills with these mental math tricks and strategies. With these tools in their mathematical toolkit, your students will be able to break down math problems into manageable- and solvable- pieces. Decomposition The first trick, decomposition, simply means breaking numbers down into an expanded form (e.g. tens and ones). This trick is useful when learning double-digit addition, as children can decompose the numbers and add like-numbers together. For example: 25 43 (20 5) (40 3) (20 40) (5 3). Its easy for students to see that 20 40 60 and 5 3 8, resulting in an answer of 68. Decomposing, or breaking apart, can be used for subtraction as well, except that the largest digit must always remain intact. For example: 57 ââ¬â 24 (57 ââ¬â 20) ââ¬â 4. So, 57 ââ¬â 20 37, and 37 ââ¬â 4 33. Compensation Sometimes, itââ¬â¢s helpful for students to round one or more of the numbers to a number thatââ¬â¢s easier to work with. For example, if a student were adding 29 53, he might find it easier to round the 29 to 30, at which point he can easily see that 30 53 83. Then, he simply has to take away the extra 1 (which he got from rounding 29 up) to arrive at a final answer of 82. Compensation can be used with subtraction, as well. For example, when subtracting 53 ââ¬âà 29, the student can round 29 up to 30: 53 ââ¬âà 30 23. Then, the student can add the 1 from rounding up to yield an answer of 24. Adding Up Another mental math strategy for subtraction is adding up. With this strategy, students add up to the next ten. They then count the tens until theyà reach the number from which they are subtracting. Finally, they figure the remaining ones. Use the problem 87 ââ¬â 36 as an example. The student is going to add up to 87 to mentally calculate the answer. She can add 4 to 36 to reach 40. Then, shell count by tens to reach 80. So far, the student has determined that there is a difference of 44 between 36 and 80. Now, she adds the remaining 7 ones from 87 (44 7 51) to figure out that 87 ââ¬â 36 51. Doubles Once students learn doubles (22, 55, 88), they can build on that knowledge base for mental math. When they encounter a math problem that is near a known doubles fact, they can simply add the doubles and adjust. For example, 6 7 is close to 6 6, which the student knows equals 12. Then, all he has to do is add the extra 1 to calculate an answer of 13. Mental Math Games Show students that mental mathà can be fun with these five active games perfect forà elementary-age students.à Find the Numbers Write five numbers on the board (e.g. 10, 2, 6, 5, 13). Then, ask students to find the numbers that match the statements you will give, such as: The sum of these numbers is 16 (10, 6)The difference between these numbers is 3 (13, 10)The sum of these numbers is 13 (2, 6, 5) Continue with new groups of numbers as needed. Groups Get the wiggles out of students in grades K-2 while practicing mental math and counting skills with this active game. Say, ââ¬Å"Get in groups ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ followed by a math fact, such as 10à ââ¬â 7 (groups of 3),à 4 2 (groups of 6), or something more challenging such as 29-17 (groups of 12). Stand Up/Sit Down Before giving students a mental math problem, instruct them to stand up if the answer is greater than a specific number or sit down if the answer is less. For example, instruct students to stand up if the answer is greater than 25 and sit down if itââ¬â¢s less. Then, call out, ââ¬Å"57-31.â⬠Repeat with more facts whose sums are greater than or less than your chosen number, or change the stand/sit number each time. Number of the Day Write a number on the board each morning. Ask students to suggest math facts that equal the number of the day. For example, if the number is 8, children might suggest 4 4, 5 3, 10à ââ¬â 2, 18à ââ¬â 10, or 6 2. For older students, encourage them to come up with suggestions for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Baseball Math Divide your students into two teams. You can draw a baseball diamond on the board or arrange the desks to form a diamond. Call out a sum to the first ââ¬Å"batter.â⬠The student advances one base forà each number sentenceà sheà gives thatà equals that sum.à Switch teams every three or four batters to give everyone a chance to play.

Giant Covalent Structures There are 2 examples of Giant covalent structures: Diamond Graphite They are bothà allotropesà of carbon, meaning they areà both differentà types of the physicalà form of Carbon. Diamond Structure: Giant covalentà latticeà of carbon atoms. Each Carbon atom is bonded to 4 others which tetrahedrally surround the atom. They have aà high melting pointà as a large amount of heat energy is needed to break their bonds. They areà unableà to conduct electricity as they have no free mobileà electrons to carry the current.Diamond is veryà hardà as there are many bonds within the substance. It is the hardest natural substance and is often used in drilling. Graphite Structure: Arranged inà layersà of atoms. Each carbon atom is joined to 3 others, leaving one outer shell electron on each carbon is free to move and able to cary the current. Therefore, they are able to conduct electricity. Graphite also has a high melting point for the same reasons as diamond. However, it is not hard like diamond but in fact very soft. There are weak forces betweenà theà layers of atoms.Theyà are able to slide over each other and therefore able to act as a lubricant. Covalent Bonding Definition:à When an atom shares one or more pairs of electrons between atoms to obtain the electronic configuration of a noble gas. Covalent bonds appear inà non-metalsà and createà molecules. They can even appear in atoms of the same element,à H2. Molecule:à Two or more atomsà chemicallyà bonded together. The covalently bonded atoms are held together byà strong attractionà between theà bonding pair of electronsà and theà nucleià of the atoms.Covalent bonds can be classified intoà twoà groups:à simple molecularà structures à giant covalentà structures Simple molecular Structures: They have low melting/boiling points dueà to the fact thatà thereà areà weakà intermolecular forces of attraction. Although, they do have strong covalent bonds. Therefore, they need less heat energy to overcome and break the weak bonds. Some substancesà sumblimeà under heating. i. e. They turn directly into a gas from a solid. Giant molecular Structures:à See post on giant Molecular structures , Ionic BondingDefinition:à The transfer of one or more electrons between 1 atom to another Why? To obtain the electronic configuration of a noble gas. Thisà is because noble gases are inert/very unreactive. If an atomà losesà an electron then the atom will form aà positiveà ion. This is because there are now more protons than electrons in the atom. If an atomà gainsà an electron, the atom forms aà negativeà ion as there are now more electrons than protons in the atom. Theà chargeà of an ion is related to where the elementââ¬â¢s position is in the periodic table.

Managing Operations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Managing Operations - Essay Example The paper will therefore analyze the production strategy the managers should choose based on the total cost minimization objective as well as summarizing the information about the aggregate plan to be shared with the supply chain partners. Production strategy based on the Total Cost Minimization The total cost minimization normally occurs at appoint when the marginal cost (MC) curve cuts the average total cost (ATC) curve at its minimum point. This therefore means that, at the minimum point, marginal cost (MC) should be equals to the Average Cost (AC). In most cases, the decision problems are usually molded as being a cost-minimization problem, and therefore, in every network, models usually have a minimization objective. The reasoning behind this is that, in particular, the decision situations never influences the income, hence minimizing costs will increase the opportunities of maximizing the profit (Shim & Siegel, 2002). The production manager should choose on pricing-based as a p roduction strategy to help in making decision based on the total cost minimization. When managers use price-based strategy, the products are usually planned according to cost-plus pricing, value-based pricing as well as target-return pricing. All these are set in such a way that the new product in the market has a competitive advantage over other similar products. Therefore, when there is no overtime for employees, managers have to make sure that the time spent by those employees is compensated for as opposed to when they work on normal hours (Media, 2010). Aggregate Plan The aggregate forecasts of the tank loads for several flavors should be shared to various supply chain partners. The forecast contains the intended tank load production every month from May through September. The companyââ¬â¢s production capacity every month is also very important information for the suppliers. The companyââ¬â¢s maximum tank loads production in a particular month is 60 tank loads, in May the forecast is 50 tank loads, in June it is 60, in July 70, in August 90, September 80 and finally October 70.There are several months where the forecasted production in a month exceeds the companyââ¬â¢s ability these are the months of July, August September and October. Therefore this information on the extra tank loads that the company needs is very crucial supply chain partners. This is because from the information they will get to know of any extra tank loads that the company might require in a particular month and therefore their services might be required. This will give them a chance to offer the company their services in terms of producing the extra tank loads that they have forecasted and yet they are not in a position as a company to produce (Shim & Siegel, 2002). The other Very important information that the supply chains need is the amount of money that is set aside by the company as cost of subcontracting as well as overtime production by various supply chains. Subcontr acting and over production by the suppliers who are available is $1600 and $1800 per tank load. Therefore with this information any supply chain that intends to supply the extra trainloads can be in a position to set a price for their tank loads. They will ensure that they come up with prices that will give them a chance to be chosen as the preferred supplier for the extra tank loads. They also need to know the cost of holding tank loads in a month as well as backordering if made by the company. This will help them make a

It is characterized by the fact that the majority intends to move around the problem instead of making an attempt towards the success of the success of an enterprise solution. Ultimately, Drucker also contributes to the development, demographics that constituted the population size structure and employment background and a new knowledge with advanced scientific assumptions thus creating new products and new market demands (Mitra 25) Mitra (25), points out at various attributes how technology has contributed towards the realization of entrepreneurial activities. The fundamental technological advancement is critical in the advancement of scientific understanding of entrepreneurial activities. Besides, it has contributed to the initiation of different kinds of industries that are either owned privately or by the state. Moreover, technology has also played a vital role in the conceptualization of feedbacks from the already existing enterprise while utilizing the results to enhance further technological advancements. On a number of occasions, government policies are seen as barriers to innovative aspects and entrepreneurial developments. In essence, a change in certain policies of the government often has devastating effects towards the success of entrepreneurial activities. According to Mitra (28), the government for setting up various policies and deployment of resources that are also characterized by incentive-oriented strategies thus most likely to affect the forces of the market demands. Mitra (33) explains that an economic equilibrium theory may not give a proper understanding of the entrepreneurial relationship because it mainly concentrates on the production function. Moreover, it concerns rationalization choice

Danger and Hope in the Information Age :: Philosophy Religion Essays
Danger and Hope in the Information Age Where can we find hope in todayââ¬â¢s information age? To answer this question satisfactorily one must be clear as to its presupposition. To find hope in the information society means that there appears to be something wrong with it, so that one needs to search for hope in such a society. In this paper I would like to outline some of the perils of today's information society and to point out that, though the perils are real and very strong, we nonetheless can overcome them through concerted action which I shall outline in the sections to follow. In short, I would like to show that there is a realistic, practicable hope in todayââ¬â¢s information society, but such a hope can never come into fruit without effort. Hope does not come through a total negation of the technology, nor does it come through a blind adherence to it. Rather realistic hope can obtain only through concerted effort to understand the implications and impact of the technology. As for the cultures of the Third Word, where the potential dangers of the technology appear grave, hope can come through strengthening of local resources and searches for ways to co-opt the technology and to adapt it into the culturesââ¬â¢ particular life-world. Human society is increasingly characterized by an increasingly pervasive use of technologies, notably among which are the information and communication technologies (ICTââ¬â¢s). Today in Bangkok one could hardly fail to be giant billboards exhorting commuters to log on the Internet and visit one web site or another. Name cards increasingly carry email addresses as well as personal web sites. In Thailand, new Internet cafà ©s spring up everyday like mushrooms in rainy season. Nowadays it is estimated that there are around four million people on the Internet in the country, up from just one or two million just a few months ago. These events and numbers are just superficial indicators of a deep change that is going on throughout the world. Technologies are obviously becoming more and more important, or at least they are becoming ubiquitous. Since there is no time in human history that this kind of profound pervasiveness of technologies, especially those connected with information and communication, occurs, human beings need to reflect and think hard about what kind of life, what kind of society we as a species are creating. This thinking calls for a bold vision and an imaginative construction of possible scenarios more than ever before, since the situation we are facing is totally new and we cannot rely solely on lessons of the past. We cannot just compare the current situation to a historical event in order to

Influence Of The Media In Forming Negative Body Image Among Females
We set out in this paper to explore the influence of the media in forming negative body image among females. In the course of the research, we also looked at the influence of mediaââ¬âprimarily TV watchingââ¬âon males just to compare the two groups and their responses to media images. Our findings reveal that although distortions in body image are growing among both males and females, females are especially vulnerable to body-image messages and respond to them with distorted behaviors around dieting and with lowered self-esteem or self-image.These conclusions are supported further by some of the work of Garner, Garfinkel, and Olmstead (1983) who claim that media exposure to stereotypes of very thin women models and reinforces the association between thinness and the characteristics such as physical attractiveness, desirability, personal self-worth, and success. This can lead to internalization of a thin ideal stereotype by females, which can result in distortion of the mental image of themselves (Downs & Harrison, 1985; Ogletree, S.M. , Williams, S. W. , Raffeld, P. , Mason, B. , & Fricke, K. , 1990; Salmons, Lewis, Rogers, Gotherer, & Booth, 1988). Indeed, Myers and Biocca (1992) claim that only 30 minutes of TV watch a day can alter a young womanââ¬â¢s perception of body shape. Why is this important? First, of all the effect of pervasive media influence, such as extensive TV watching and the reading of womenââ¬â¢s magazine which are full of diet programs, are distorting the image of femalesââ¬â¢ perceptions of their ideal body image.Whereas, in some eras in history a ââ¬Å"Rubenesqueâ⬠or plump figure was considered a favorable body type, in this period of time the ideal type is an emaciated look. This distortion can lead to behaviors that create unhealthy dieting and exercise patterns that have the potential to seriously affect a young womanââ¬â¢s long-term health outlook and can lead to diseases such as Anorexia nervosa and Bulimia . A second consideration is the role of self-image. It appears as something of a chicken-and-egg issue. That is, do media images cause lowered self-esteem and lead to unhealthy dieting and exercise behavior.Or does the practice of consistently unhealthy behaviors that donââ¬â¢t lead to the distorted image that is imagined by some women cause lowered self-esteem? In an article on the Media Awareness Network, it is claimed that all this media barrage leaves the message that women are always in need of adjustment so that whether it starts with the chicken or the egg the woman is going after a mostly unattainable goal of extreme thinness and thus canââ¬â¢t win and will ultimately end up with a lowered self-image.The third point is that the media benefit from the constant message that women are inadequate. The article on the Media Awareness Network cites the fact that the diet, cosmetic, and plastic surgery industries are direct beneficiaries of womenââ¬â¢s feelings that their b ody images are inadequate. They state that, ââ¬Å"By presenting an ideal difficult to achieve and maintain, the cosmetic and diet product industries are assured of growth and profits. And itââ¬â¢s no accident that youth is increasingly promoted, along with thinness, as an essential criterion of beauty.Such women are more likely to buy beauty products, new clothes, diet aids, and memberships to health clubs. Obviously, this is a situation where a need is created, a consumer is convinced of the need, and services and products are introduced to fill the need. What are some of the considerations that exist that are trying to address and disrupt this unhealthy contract? The article on the Media Awareness Network states that ââ¬Å"There have been efforts in the magazine industry to buck the trend. For several years the Quebec magazine Coup de Pouce has consistently included full-sized women in their fashion pages and Chà ¢telaine has pledged not to touch up photos and not to include models less than 25 years of age. â⬠There was also significant attention to the models for Dove cosmetic products, who were average-sized women. These ads appeared in magazines and on TV. An informal scan of TV ads and programs might show some average-sized women, but they are still few and far between. Our unfortunate conclusion is that the fantasy image of a super-thin woman still sells products.

Response: The Leader of an organization expect an essential part to receive from other fellow members and as well participation of his own performance for developing the company. Its particularly trying for them to launch the essential planned methodology. For making a plan, he should inspect the present status of cooperation. In like manner, its superior must know the external regular components and examples. The leader should have a clarity regarding the vision and mission of the organization, and the thing executed in the past and to be completed in future. Moreover, he should acknowledge what made him enhance the visi on and mission. Key organizing should incorporate those people, and low and medium level bosses where a chain could be confined successfully and organizing could be suitable from beginning to end and base to top correspondence. The leader should be prepared for knowing the minor issues and enlighten them. This could be acknowledged by him simply on the off chance that he takes care of an incredible correspondence with everyone who fits in with the piece of a key planning methodology and the guidance. Hence the leader should not to carelessness any line directors in the organizing procedure. Leader is a person who likes the whole assembly for achieving its goals. Strategic planning and implementation cant be completed overnight. It takes some months or sometimes years to make a complete one. Unique planning additionally takes number of years for good leaders to execute its crucial plan and make it extraordinary. The Leader should recognize the people inside and remotely who have view towards the organization change and join them in the plan. He should moreover aggregate the benefits required for the plan, and by recalling this, he should keep more than the enough stakes in light of the fact that no one can need whats to come situation. For a productive correspondence, the steps should be: 1. Most perfect methodology to illuminate vision and mission by making a logo. 2. Circulated compact summation about course of action with yearly reports makes available the game plan to each and every individual 3. Gathering the people and every interesting makes correspondence feasible and further form steps could be discussed. 4. Recognizing and engaging the totals that achieved goals. Part 2 ââ¬â Provide 10 concepts, issues, philosophies, or practices in the areas of strategic planning that you can utilize in your workplace. Name the aspect, describe it, and explain the implication for your workplace. This does not have to be in essay form bu t can be in bullet form. 1) Vision and Mission: These are the explanations that give the vision and mission of a company. Vision description must state that what it have to be some time to come, i.e., propelling certain years. Statement of purpose of reason states the system to be endeavoured to accomplish its vision. These are created in such a way, to the point that they spur everyone in the organization to attain the destinations. The enhancing of these both illustrations makes everyone get clarity on what they are relied upon to be and decrease the mixed up presumptions that are by and large event in the most natures turf. Furthermore these declarations should be delineated in a motivational way. 2) Evaluation: The heading dare to be done before making plans for anything in the acquaintanceship is the necessities examination that should be completed like SWOT examination. This illuminates both inner part and external condition of the company. This is encapsulated ins ide things like qualities and shortcomings, and the external environment like chances and dangers of a organization. 3) Improving structure of organization: This expects a basic part in making a fitting need to finish its targets and similarly takes care of an extraordinary correspondence between everyone. Furthermore, it is used to review the existing plans and operations that assistance in propelling the new frameworks. Keeping an eye on its methods, guidelines, and makes specialists to consider the new one to be completed. Its greatly troublesome to development a remarkable administration structure. 4) Recognizing important aspects like customer satisfaction: This expect a principal part in light of the way that the standard proposition of any business must be the satisfaction of customers since without this, any business cant make due in the business segment. This could be accomplished simply by outfitting the quality things and headway of new things as the time chan ges. Moreover altering the things or stock in chance to the customer makes customer feel satisfaction. This extends the characteristics of the organization, and this must be offered need to the company methodologies while moving forward. 5) Strategic planning and implementation: Basically propelling the plan is not imperative; it should be understood by everyone who expect a part in it. Gave that a peculiar having a spot with the game plan doesnt grasp it, then it may assist the dissatisfaction in utilization. Moreover, there should be extraordinary correspondence took care of between each one level, which speeds up the path for success. 6) Rundown on goals to be achieved: There should be given the need between the destinations since this prompts clearly what targets to be touched base from the beginning and after that next with the objective that the success could be landed at organized. 7) Implementing the plans to achieve goals as per importance: Action arrangem ents could be made since they are viewed as the fleeting targets and combining of these makes the cooperation achieve its mission. So we have to enhance these, and focus on touching base at them one after interchange makes to attain mission easily. 8) Distinguishing and enhancing the individuals strength areas: The key some piece of a leader is to distinguish the people who are suitable to enhance and execute the key arrangement. This cant be done on simply certain criteria, and needs to distinguish a significant measure and study them out and out to pick them. 9) Implementation and checking: This is exceptionally troublesome on the grounds that if the execution is not successful, then there is a loss of investment, time, and in all others ways, and the organization is going to endure a considerable measure. A legitimate overseeing is to be carried out in specific interims and should make any progressions if needed. Likewise, making reviews and having reactions helps in creating the progressions in the arrangement. 10) Customers needs: It is a champion around the most basic practices in the key needing to have a customer focus that assists in knowing the headway of the course of action to customer at despite seemingly any conditions. 1 of 7
